Abstract
This thesis presents a new approach for utilizing Remote Sensing and Geospatial Information Systems technologies in conjunction with Hydraulics Engineering simulation software for building conceptual models. The wide range of ArcView, HEC-RAS, HEC-GeoRAS and ER Mapper functionality was completely utilized for building a conceptual model to predict and visualize the year 2000, 10, 20 and 100 years flooding scenarios by applying the designed model to a section of Qu'Appelle River, located in Southern Saskatchewan. Landsat TM satellite imageries, digital terrain model, and digital topographic sheets, were used as main data sets. IKONOS 1-m resolution satellite imagery, and the national topographic sheet (1:50,000) of the study area, together with fifteen profiles of July 2000 flow statistics were used as reference data. Three time-series change detection images for the period between 1988–1992, 1992–2000 and 1988–2000 demonstrated that Landsat satellite data are efficient multitemporal and multispectral media for characterization and analysis of floodplain. Findings of this research indicated that integration of GIS and Remote Sensing technologies are an effective, fast, and economical tool for conceptualization, simulation and visualization of environmental models and for prediction of spatial extent of up to 100 years of flood scenario for the Qu'Appelle River.
