Abstract
The field work for this project was performed during the period of July 4 to September 12, 1980 at Pangnirtung Fiord, Baffin Island, N.W.T. ... The project was designed with several goals in mind: 1) to provide a quantitative description of the sedimentary and biological environments encountered on the intertidal flats, 2) to gain an understanding of the processes which contribute to the formation on intertidal flats at Pangnirtung Fiord, 3) to assess the distribution of tidal flats within Pangnirtung Fiord, 4) to develop a biophysical classification scheme for the intertidal flats at Pangnirtung Fiord, and 5) to assess the sensitivity of the nearshore environment to pollution, in particular, oil spills. The sampling program was designed to examine the littoral sedimentary and biological environments. Grab samples of surficial sediments were recovered, measurements of boulder size were made, and a detailed topographic survey was undertaken.Reconnaissance sampling of the attached algae and epi- and infaunal macrobenthos was performed in conjunction with the sediment sampling component of the study.
