Abstract
Coastal landforms in Pangnirtung Fiord have developed in response to fluctuating Holocene sea level. Subarctic waters replaced polar waters along the eastern coast of Baffin Island in the late and middle Holocene. Marine molluscs with subarctic affinities (Astarte striata, Chlamys islandica, Macoma balthica, Mya pseudoarenaria, Mytilus edulis ) expanded their range during this period, arriving in cumberland Sound about 8700 BP. The modern molluscan fauna of Pangnirtung Fiord is composed of subarctic and panarctic-boreal shallow water species, reflecting the continued presence of subarctic waters in cumberland Sound.
