Abstract
The application of dendroglaciological research techniques to reconstruct Little Ice Age (LIA) glacier activity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains has led to the description of glacial advances in the 12th and 13th centuries, the early 18th century, and the mid 19th century. Corresponding advances in the British Columbia Coast Mountains remain inadequately described. Our investigations at Bridge Glacier in the summer of 2002 show that the glacier was advancing downvalley into an established forest between the 5th and 6th century, several hundred years prior to comparable LIA advances in the easterly Canadian Rockies. Coupled with wood samples radiocarbon dated to the 13-14th century and nested LIA terminal moraines lichenometrically-dated to between 1600 and 1890 AD, our preliminary survey suggests that a record of glacier activity spanning the LIA exists at Bridge Glacier.
