Abstract
Lichenometry is a method used for glacial geomorphological studies. It provides a relative time scale for glacial fluctuations around the margin of the Barnes Ice Cap, Baffin Island, Northwest Territories. Only epipetric lichens with distinct and almost circular thalli can be used for dating. Studies of lichens in this area showed that maximum lichen diameters increase in size away from the ice cap and that maximum diameters are similar both on contemporaneous moraines and within basins of former glacial lakes. Moraines of the Lewis Glacier and Barnes Ice Cap indicate recessions accompanied by stillstands and, sometimes, readvances and suggest the existence of a major end-moraine system of Sub-Atlantic age and of other important moraines dating back to 1680, 1790, 1890, and 1920 A.D.
