Abstract
The morphological characteristics of selected streams and rivers in southern Ontario have been collated to provide design guidance in the development of natural channel systems for the hydrographic region of southern Ontario using a stream classification taxonomy developed by Rosgen (1985, 1994). Forty-seven rural streams were surveyed in detail for the hydrologic, fluvial geomorphologic and sedimentological characteristics which were considered representative of 276 streams assessed. Findings demonstrate that for hydraulic and morphological characteristics there are distinct distinguishable trends in the geometric relationships when the rivers were stratified using the Rosgen (1994) classification method. Roughness coefficients for Manning, Darcy-Weisbach and Chezy equations were developed using groupings of streams according to Rosgen classification demonstrate considerable improvement in predictability of each coefficient. General sediment transport regime parameters of unit stream power and critical dimensionless shear stress also demonstrate distinct relationship communities when developed for streams grouped by the classification.
