Abstract
An automated approach to gathering landslide inventory data using a combination of high-resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation data is offered as a possible alternative to the traditional methods of aerial photographic interpretation. Such inventories are currently receiving a great deal of attention within the research literature both for their value in assessing landslide hazard over large areas and in determining process rates. Previous research has demonstrated that per pixel spectral response patterns are ineffective for the discrimination of mass movements. This technique utilizesimage segmentation and digital elevation data which offers the potential to identify mass movements based not only on reflectance but also on their shape properties and their geomorphic context. Furthermore, the mass movements are classified by process into debris slides, debris flows, and rock slides making the method far more useful to geomorphologists. A hierarchical classification scheme is utilized to eliminate areas that are not of interest and to identify areas where mass movements are probable. A supervised classification of the latter is then conducted using spectral, shape, and texturalproperties. The resulting accuracy was 90% for debris slides, 60% for debris flows, and 80% for rock slides for an overall classification accuracy of 77%.
