Abstract
Field work involving till sampling and surficial geology mapping was undertaken in the Pickle Lake,Wawa and Armstrong areas of northwestern Ontario this past summer. The field work done: in Pickle Lake was to evaluate the response of “carbonate till” to changes in local bedrock lithology; in Wawa, to determine glacial dispersion from the “Engagement zone” lamprophyre; and at Armstrong, to create regional Quaternary geology maps and collect till samples for heavy mineral indicator and geochemical analysis over a part of the Caribou Lake greenstone belt located north of Lake Nipigon. The Pickle Lake and Wawa studies are aimed at trying to determine the usefulness of till as a mineral exploration tool in these particular unique geological environments. The Armstrong area study will provide guidance in the interpretation of results from overburden sampling programs and regionalinformation on the mineral potential of this part of the Caribou Lake greenstone belt. The Caribou Lake greenstone belt area lies within an area that experienced a complex interplay between fluctuating glacial margins.
