Abstract
Three moraine systems in southernmost Labrador and southeastern Québec - the Brador(e), the Belles Amours, and the Paradise - were built during inland retreat of the Laurentide ice margin some time after 12,600 14C BP. These moraines are of particular interest in understanding the ice-marginal dynamics of the Laurentide ice sheet (i) immediately after separation from the Newfoundland Ice Cap in the Strait of Belle Isle, and (ii) following a relatively rapid tidewater deglaciation of the northeastern Gulf of St. Lawrence. In addition, new data on the nature and timing of these moraines will provide an opportunity to assess their palaeoclimatic significance, with comparison to other regional moraine systems in southern Québec (Baie Trinité, Québec North Shore), central Labrador (Little Drunken, Sebaskachu), and western Newfoundland (Piedmont, Ten Mile Lake, Cloud River). In this presentation we report on the first results of our investigations which have involved air photo interpretation, sedimentological analysis, and radiocarbon dating. Future work will include subsurface mapping using ground penetrating radar, cosmogenic nuclide dating of surface boulders, and further sediment analysis in exposures through the moraines.
