Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to measure in situ permafrost creep in relation to 1) thermal conditions, 2) ice content, 3) grain size and cryotexture, 4) stress gradients and 5) associated gelifluction and mass-wasting processes. Fieldwork in June, August and November of 1985 resulted in the instrumentation of five slopes in the vicinity of Rea Point. It is proposed to survey and monitor these sites during the forthcoming 22 months. This will entail fieldwork at several times throughout the year. The next visit will be in February/March 1986.
