Abstract

Fossil sand wedges beneath till are present in a sand pit at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Climatic implications derived from the wedges are: (1) permafrost was present for at least 400 years and possibly 2400 years prior to ice advance; (2): average annual temperature was at least -5C or 7C colder than present; (3) percipitaiton was less than half of the present percipitation of 40 cm/yr.
