Abstract
This paper will discuss geoarchaeological investigations undertaken at the Stampede Archaeological Site located in the Cypress Hills, southeastern Alberta. Using Mazama tephra as the stratigraphic marker both the natural and cultural landscape of approximately 6800 yrs BP will be reconstructed. Mazama tephra was deposited during the Hypsithermal, a period during which the climate of the Northwest Plains was significantly warmer and drier than present day. The geomorphic systems of the Cypress Hills are extremely sensitive to climatic changes. Therefore, landscape reconstruction during this time interval is critical in furthering our understanding of landscape formation and human occupation at the Stampede Site. This research will assist in furthering the understanding processes involved in landscape evolution during significant periods of climatic change. Discussion will detail the geoarchaeological techniques utilized to reconstruct the natural landscape as well as preliminary results of this research.
