Abstract
In ablation zone of Arctic valley glaciers, measurements suggest existence of layer of temperate ice underlying cold ice. Presents mathematical model that calculates temperature in cold part and position of cold-temperate transition surface. Application of model to Laika Glacier, Coburg Island, using present-day conditions, results in wholly cold glacier with cold sole, in contrast to observations. Present polythermal state of glacier is suspected to be remnant of earlier conditions; steady-state solutions representing polythermal structure can be found within range of prescribed conditions which are judged to be realistic for this glacier at its last maximum extent
