Abstract
The purpose of this text is to illustrate the wide variety of geoscience mapping that is presently undertaken around the world. To meet this goal, contributions from specialists in several countries were solicited to cover a number of subdisciplinary and thematic topics collectively called Geoenvironmental Mapping. Included in this compilation are topical papers on volcanic hazards, landslides, dolines, tsunamis, radon potential, medical geology, rainfall erosion, engineering geology, borehole stratigraphy, lake sediment geochemistry, aggregate resources, remote sensing, etc. The papers share common thread of relying on mapping and maps for communication of results. Individual papers in this volume serve the purpose of illustrating the relevance and importance of geosciences when dealing with 21st Century problems, issues and concerns. Geoscience has always been an important element in our understanding, appreciation and management of the Earth, but this relevance has lost respectability in recent years. The book reaffirms the global need for mapping geoscientific data.
