Abstract
Numerous vents are present on the seafl oor of the lower St. Lawrence Estuary. Some are grouped in clusters, while others are aligned along underlying bedrock structures. The morphology of some vents suggests that they formed recently and are potentially active. In order to test the hypothesis that the vents of the St. Lawrence are actively releasing gas, a scientifi c cruise was organized to video record two targets that were identifi ed as good candidates. The images show the presence of abundant marine organisms near the vents, including bacterial mats, some showing signs of calcifi cation. Gas bubbles were also observed, indicating present-day activity of these vents.
