Abstract
A recent archaeological survey near the St. Mary River in southern Alberta has revealed cultural material in possible association with Mazama Ash. The ash deposit was discovered approximately 30 cm below the modern surface on a small area of upland that is now subject to both aeolian and fluvial erosion. While Mazama Ash is relatively common in alluvial deposits such as terrace surfaces and fans in southern Alberta, the presence of the ash in this location was unexpected given the local topography and geomorphology and suggests that the area has been subject to a range of different geomorphological processes in the last 7,000 or more years. The presence of the ash in this topographic position and situation has implications for the evaluation of this and other sites in similar geomorphological circumstances. The site also appears, on the basis of the presence of Mazama to have at least two occupations one of which may be several thousand years older than the other.
