Abstract
Regression analyses using hydroclimatic and geomorphic variables were employed to estimate suspended-sediment yields for 14 ungaged watersheds in Atlantic Canada. Long-term mean suspended-sediment yields and annual suspended-sediment yields for a particular year were estimated. The regression models provided an acceptable method of estimating suspended-sediment yields on a long-term mean basis and in some cases on an annual basis for specific years for basins having drainage areas greater than 5 sq km. The incorporation of an added constant term improved the regression equations for estimating long-term mean yields. The method proposed for estimating annual yields was found to be inappropriate when applied for the estimation of monthly yields. It was concluded that the time scale of 1 month was too short to apply such procedures. The equations were applied to two small watersheds not used in the base data set. The application of the regression equations to these basins was unsatisfactory. The two test basins were among the smallest considered and the results for smaller basins can be expected to be poorer than for relatively large basins in which there is more averaging of the sediment production, transportation, and storage processes. The adopted regression equations have a potential application for evaluating the expected changes in annual suspended-sediment yields in response to relatively small changes that may be imposed on one or more of the independent variables, such as those associated with clearing of land, drainage of swamps, or the modifications of hydrological inputs
