Abstract
Recent expert reviews on the state of Canadian groundwater indicate that data access is a key barrier to groundwater science, commerce and management. The Groundwater Information Network (GIN) removes this barrier by providing asingle access point to key groundwater data held by some provincial, territorial, and federal agencies. GIN utilizes Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) technologies and standards to enable transparent access to the distributed and heterogeneous data. Its sophisticated online portal also enables the data to be viewed and analysed in rich geographic context, enabling diverse usage. GIN thus represents one of the first groundwater SDI. This paper presents an overview of the GIN system, including its requirements and architecture, as well as recent and future developments that confirm the feasibility of the GIN approach
