Abstract
Several aspects of recent trends in climate in Canada affect flood magnitude and frequency. On many rivers, the average of snowmelt induced spring floods has been declining with more of the snowpack melting gradually over warmerwinters. The Red River is the notable exception. On the other hand, the frequency of high intensity rainfalls affecting small watersheds has been rising at least in southeastern Canada. Projections by latest climate models with recent emission scenarios (IPCC-SRES) are examined to assess whether recent trends are likely to continue. Implications are considered for flood damage reduction programs.
