Abstract
A new fully-integrated 3D surface / subsurface flow model is applied to an exceptionally well characterized reach of Whiteman’s Creek in Southern Ontario to determine its ability to predict spatial and temporal variations in groundwater discharge into and directly adjacent to the stream. The detailed surface and subsurface characterization studies are focused in the vicinity of a point-bar of Whiteman’s Creek. These studies include an intensive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey, boreholes transects, and trenching. The GPR survey is used to define 3D subsurface stratigraphy on a 10cm vertical scale using a 200 MHz antenna. Borehole and trenching data are used for field-validation of the GPR transects. The surface topography is mapped using a total station survey on a 1 metre by 1 metre grid over the entire study area and groundwater flow and seepage data are being collected using multi-level piezometers, mini-piezometers and seepage meters. We will report on the progress of the field studies and a preliminary 3D application of the integrated model to the site.
