Abstract
The major components of runoff and sediment transport in badland micro-catchments are described. Rainsplash plays an important role in sediment entrainment but is not significant in sediment transport. The dominant mode of sediment transport on all lithologies and surfaces is surface or sub-surface runoff. The timing, duration and volume of runoff discharge are critical and vary widely on different lithologic surfaces and with changes in antecedent moisture conditions. Despite exhibiting very complex patterns of water and sediment transport, the results provide a good basis for understanding the variable response of mesoscale catchments to typical storm events
