Abstract
Historically ground hazards have caused periodic losses and interruptions of rail service. Case histories are cited that demonstrate that severe weather, primarily extreme precipitation events, trigger these ground hazards. Work is in progress to develop weather indices that could be used as alert criteria within the railway’s operating framework. These indices would be region or site specific and specific to ground movement hazards that could potentially affect the safe operation of the track in that region. The railway industry is well suited to the application of weather warning indices and graduated-actions in response to the severity of the climatic conditions. As a result, the application of this research to the rail sector appears to provide a greater opportunity to reduce the impact of ground-movement on the railway industry, than otherbusiness and public sectors. This paper includes an update on the research activities completed to date.
