Abstract
Examination of concentrations of several chemical species in a 7.37 m deep pit excavated close to the 1978 summer equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of Athabasca Glacier (2694 m) suggests that: (1) aerosol forms of NO3-, PO43-, and reactive SiO2 entered this area in diluted concentrations compared to values for Edmonton, Alberta, the closest heavily populated area; (2) Fe values were similar to those in Edmonton; and (3) the glacier's yearly net mass balance for the sample area was 1.5 and 2.4-2.7 m H2O equivalent for the 1976- Edmonton; and (3) the glacier's yearly net mass balance for the sample area was 1.5 and 2.4-2.7 m H2O equivalent for the 1976- 1977 and 1977-1978 mass balance years.
