Abstract

Morphometric characteristics of more than 250 snow-avalanche paths in north-west Montana and south-west Alberta differs with aspect and position relative to continental divide. Particularly noticeable is difference between south- and north-facing paths. South-facing paths descend to lower elevations and produce runout zones of greater extent. Thay are also more prone to debris flows. Avalanche paths act as conduits for sediments that may be hazardous to human activities at lower elevations
