Abstract
A sediment budget was developed for the South Saugeen River, Southern Ontario (drainage area 615 km2) upstream of the town of Mount Forest. The South Saugeen River is an irregularly meandering, gravel-bed river which is partly or wholly entrenched in valley walls up to 20 m composed of glacial material. Estimates of input of sediment from glacial and alluvial banks and agricultural areas were done through field investigation, air photo interpretation, published reports and soil-loss equations. Output estimates were derived from published suspended sediment measurements along with sedimentation from the Mount Forest and Ayton reservoirs. Results indicated that up to 66% of the input of sediment to the river is derived from high glacial banks and that inputs from agricultural sources is relatively small. This contrasts with previous reports that 70-100% of suspended sediment yield in Southern Ontario rivers is derived from agricultural sources.
