Abstract
The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), together with various provincial government and non-governmental organizations, have been recording wetland habitat information in conjunction with the annual Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey (WBPS) for the past number of years. Study areas consisted of 65 air/ground segments up until 1990 that comprise the southern Prairie Canada ground portion of the annual WBPS. Upwards of 12,000 basins were studied until 1990, after which the survey was expanded to approximately 30,000 wetland basins over 130 segments. The wetland classification method used is based on a system developed by Shaw and Fredine (1956). The wetland classes, or types, are dry, temporary (Type I), seasonal (Type III), semi-permanent (Type IV), and permanent (Type V). In addition the CWS has recorded water levels, as well as streams and artificial impoundments. Over the past 11 years, several trends have been noted, these include the increase of artificial wetlands, the increase in dry basins, and the annual fluctuations between dry basins, and type I and III wetlands.
