Abstract
As part of an initiative to prepare an environmental sensitivity map for Placentia Bay, Newfoundland (an area considered to have high potential for an oil-related environmental accident), this report describes a study conducted to provide preliminary biological and geomorphologic classification schemes for the bay and to examine the degree to which the geomorphologic regimes of the bay affect the development of its biological communities. The first part discusses the biological classification of the bay, based on a hierarchical three-fold subdivision. The primary elements involved in the classification are oceanographic circulation, wave regime, freshwater influx, effects of terrestrial influx, pack ice activity, geomorphologic & climatic regime, and anthropogenic influences. The biologic communities are considered within a framework of environments ranging from the entire bay to specific representative sites. The second part discusses the relationship of these communities to the geomorphic regions of the bay.
