Abstract
In a typical period from July to mid-October, Newfoundland is impacted by 2 to 3 storms of tropical origin. Many are extratropical transitions, characterized by abrupt changes in track and large amounts of rainfall. The number of storm events in Newfoundland is not proportional to the total number of hurricanes occurring over the Caribbean Sea. “Igor” impacted eastern Newfoundland in September 2010. Enhanced influx of natural and anthropogenic materials produced net accumulation on beaches. At sites where anthropogenic debris was not present, little indication of “Igor” remained after December 2010. The geomorphic effects of “Igor” were similar to those of other storms: only the areal extent of Igor’s impacts was unique.
