Abstract
Ten bed-material load models were tested against transport data collected from the Nottawasaga River, a sandy-bed river. Velocity was measured with an electromagnetic current meter and shear velocity was determined from velocity profiles and the von Karman-Prandtl equation. Transport in the near-bed zone was measured with a Helley-Smith 'bed load' sampler and a D-59 depth integrated sediment sampler was used to collect sediment from the remaining portion of the flow. To determine the prediction capability of each model, a mean geometric deviation of the discrepancy ratios (ratio of computed transport rates to measured rates) was computed. Ackers and White (1973) D50 and D35, Laursen (1958) and Yang (1979) D50 and graded sediment models were the best predictors. Maddock (1976), Karim and Kennedy (1983), Brownlie (1981) and Yang (1973) D50 and graded sediment models performed moderately well. The Shen and Hung (1972) model did poorly, indicating that the Nottawasaga River may have been too large to apply this equation. Van Rijn's model was unreliable. The Engelund and Hansen (1967) model also performed poorly.
