Abstract
In terms of archaeological research, the Eastern Townships region was not well studied until recently, although significant discoveries had previously indicated the great potential of this area. The Department of anthropology of the Université de Montréal has held its summer field school in the Lac Mégantic area since 2001, with the general long-term objective of building a detailed history from the early colonization by Paleo-Indian hunters at the end of the Ice Age around 12,500 years ago to the arrival of Europeans. The adaptive strategy characterized by fairly mobile hunter-gatherers in the Eastern Townships seems to have been very stable over several millennia and in particular over the last 3000 years. This way of life gave minor importance to earthenware vessels because of their fragility. This statement is supported by the limited number of ceramic fragments on archaeological sites. A total of 48 samples found at these sites have been analyzed by neutron activation analysis to help determine the provenance of the vessels. Were they made locally or obtained through exchange? Do they share a common origin throughout the study area? Do the observed similarities among vessels of different sites tell us something about the territoriality of these groups? The network patterns over time, which spans about 2000 years, will be discussed, taking into account some limiting factors of our research.
