Abstract
The coastline of the Great Lakes in Ontario is composed of a variety of shoreline types of - which approximately 1% is coastal dune fields. Coastal dunes in Ontario are found on each of the Great Lakes and are commonly associated with baymouth barriers, tombolo bars as well as at the head of small coves and large bays. The Great Lakes dune fields exhibit a range of geomorphologic development, areal extent and human impact. These unique and rare coastal landform assemblages are protected through a variety of ways. National Parks protect two dune systems while Provincial Parks protect significant stretches of several major systems along the Great Lakes. Coastal Dune fields have also been protected under the Areas of Natural Scientific Interest (ANSI) designation and in National Wildlife Areas. Ontario's citizens are also engaged in the protection of coastal dunes through a number of organizations. Future protection for Great Lakes shoreline containing coastal dunes may be possible under new environmental protection programs.
