Abstract
Sorting of fluvial gravels occurs over a scale range of order 109 x. Grain arrangements hold major implications for sediment mobilization, transport, and deposition, and they set important environmental conditions for aquatic organisms. At the other extreme, the organization of sedimentary basin fill s records important elements of earth history and controls migration and occurrence of hydrocarbon resources. Between these endpoints, the architecture of the entire riverscape and the occurrence of aggregate and water resources are significantly controlled by the sedimentology of fluvial gravels.
