Abstract
This review is intended to bring together accounts of a variety of streamflow measuring techniques applicable to rivers with peak flows up to 300 m3/s (10,000 cfs). The methods are primarily suitable for the economical collection of short-term records at inaccessible or isolated sites. A few of the methods have been developed in connection with the authors' own work, but the majority of them are not new. The descriptions are widely spread through the literature of hydrology, civil engineering, forestry, agriculture, geomorphology and glaciology. In bringing them together, it is hoped that the prospective field worker will be provided with a single discussion of available methods. Comparison of the various methods, and consideration of his own field requirements should enable the field worker to chose a suitable method for his programme and to pursue further detail in the references. The emphasisis on field practice, with considerable detail being presented for the major techniques.
