Abstract
Comparison of beach profiles surveyed across a rapidly retreating sandy barrier spit of the Canadian Beaufort Sea show that both overwash and aeolian processes contribute to landward sediment: transport. Although most of the sediment transport to the lagoon is caused by overwash flows during storm surges, our measurements suggest that aeolian sand transport may be significant when winds are approaching with some angle to the shore perpendicular. In contrast to the mid-latitude coastlines where wind-blown sand from the beach is commonly trapped in coastal dunes, aeolian sand transport to the lagoons in this arctic region is favoured by the virtual absence of coastal dunes on most of the coastal accumulation landforms.
