Abstract
Environment Canada has operated a river sediment monitoring program in northern Canada since 1972. Although sediment data are now available for a number of locations most efforts have focused on the Mackenzie River basin. Specific emphasis has been placed on the Mackenzie, in particular the Mackenzie Delta, due to concerns over further flow regulation of the Mackenzie River and potential impacts from northern oil and gas development in the Mackenzie Delta/Beaufort Sea area. A recent evaluation of sediment data in consort with Mackenzie Delta hydrology and hydraulic studies has provided insight into the sediment regime of this complex environment. These insights have been used to re-assess sediment monitoring in the basin/delta and re-align the program to ensure that knowledge gaps and emerging issues can be met while maintaining the integrity of a long term database. Since delta flooding, sedimentation, vegetation patterns, wildlife and subsistence uses are inextricably linked, strategies to integrate the sediment monitoring program into a broader ecosystem context are explored
