Abstract

A update of research results from the GLIMS (Global Land Ice Measurements from Space) project at the University of Alberta. The project has documented large scale areal retreat of land ice over the Queen Elizabeth Islands as well as a significant number of surging glaciers. The contribution of high Arctic glacier ablation to sea level rise was estimated to be 1.45 mm since 1960. This represents ~9-19% of the glacier contribution to global sea level rise outside Greenland and Antarctica.
