Abstract
We test the capacity of electrical resistivity imaging (ERI), an innovative shallow geophysical method, to image two large pre-late Wisconsinan-aged valley-fills in Alberta and Montana. Valley-fills record the history of pre-glacial and glacial sedimentary deposits. These valley-fills are of considerable economical value as groundwater aquifers, aggregate resources (sand and gravel), placers (gold, diamond) and sometime gas reservoirs. The approximate locations of pre-glacial valley-fills have been mapped, but the scarcity of borehole (well log) information and sediment exposures make reconstruction of their stratigraphy and cross-section profiles difficult. Results from three different ERI surveys are presented in this paper: one of the Onoway pre-glacial valley near Edmonton and two of the Paleo-Missouri valley in north-central Montana. When coupled with borehole information, ERI produces greatly enhanced images of valley-fill stratigraphy and cross-sectional profile. Valley-fills geometry and composition are further compared and discussed.
