Abstract
Two classes of landslides, unique to the permafrost areas have been identified along the Mackenzie Valley. Flow mechanisms are associated with the local thawing of the permafrost. Major rock slides occur on overdip slopes in sedimentary, metamorphic and volcanic successions. Detailed studies of hazards have sometimes followed settlement rather than preceded it through some useful maps of particular hazards have been produced, which caused the relocation of communities.
