Abstract
The sediment transport models of McLaren and Bowles (1985) and Gao and Collins (1992) are compared using sediment from the nearshore of Witty’s Lagoon and Spit, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The nearshore geomorphology of Witty’s Lagoon is characterized by episodic cliff failure and subsequent transport of sediment towards the spit via alongshore currents. The resulting net transport pathway maps from each of the two models are compared with the known transport direction deduced from geophysicalevidence (eroding cliff to spit) in order to assess the accuracy of both models. In doing so, the underlying assumptions of the models are analyzed and limitations in both spatial and temporal scale of both models are identified so as to decrease any interpretational errors that might emerge from both models.
