Abstract
Buried-valley aquifers function as high-yield groundwater sources throughout the Canadian Prairies. They have distinct geologies and a distinct stratigraphic setting, which imparts them with particular hydrogeological properties. They are commonly encased in low-permeability strata—shale below and thick muddy till above—and their fills tend to be heterogeneous and architecturally complex. This can lead to reduced recharge and can cause aquifer compartmentalization. The collection of electromagnetic data coupled with well, seismic, and hydrogeological data appears to offer the best way of mapping valley-fill heterogeneity, identifying potential recharge pathways, and improving the understanding of sediment-hosted groundwater resources in the Canadian Prairies
