Abstract
Since 2000 we have been working, with colleagues in the US Pacific Northwest and across Canada, towards a common approach for assessing, describing and reporting soil disturbance for research, operations and international protocols. Progress has been made and reported in journal papers and conference presentations on an adaptive management process for soil conservation, elements of a common approach and in terms of describing progress in the Pacific Northwest. Currently, every jurisdiction and most research reports soil disturbance in differing ways, making it difficult to compare results or take advantage of work elsewhere. The elements of a common approach include soil disturbance description, monitoring methods and hazard rating approaches. Using examples from BC, we will describe data from studies, and monitoring approaches and processes, that support an adaptive management framework for soil conservation. We will also describe how soil disturbance is reported under the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management, and in the BC State of the Forest Report.
