Abstract
Measurements of magnetic susceptibility of continental-shelf sands off central Vancouver Island revealed two areas of anomalously high values: (1) at the mouths of coastal inlets, suggesting a reworking of glacial and glacio-fluvial sediments; and (2) the outer-shelf downslope from outcropping deformed Tertiary -- Pleistocene strata, resulting from the winnowing of these older sediments during periods of lowered sea level. Magnetic susceptibility was highest within the silt and fine sand fractions and lowest in the clay and coarse sand fractions; though because of the grain-size distributions, the fine sand invariably contributed more to the overall sample susceptibility than the other size fractions.
