Abstract
New satellite derived observations of the cryosphere are being developed by Canadian scientists to contribute a snapshot on the current state of the cryosphere to the ‘Variability and Change in the Canadian Cryosphere’ and ‘State and Fate of the Cryosphere’ International Polar Year projects. These new datasets include: passive microwave snow water equivalent and seasonal frozen ground datasets specific to tundra regions; snow water equivalent estimates in alpine regions from blended hydrologic model and satellitedata; daily and 10-day 1 km resolution multi-sensor retrievals of snow extent, lake ice, albedo, land cover, and phenology for the Arctic land surface; pan-Arctic ice cap and terrestrial snow melt characteristics from Ku-band QuikSCAT data; estimates of Canadian Arctic Archipelago multi-year ice fluxes satellite measurements and data assimilation; and river ice conditions from SAR data. Field campaigns are essential both to validate these satellite retrieval activities, and to provide unique observations on characteristics of the cryosphere. A 4000 km snowmobile transect in April 2007 provided unique ground observations of sub-Arctic tundra snow cover for passive microwave SWEalgorithm development. Airborne passive microwave surveys across forested and tundra regions of northern Quebec and the Northwest Territories during winter of 2008 further advanced these activities. Ice shelf thickness measurements along the north coast of Ellesmere Island were acquired through a unique field measurement opportunity in April 2008. This presentation will provide an overview of results from these remote sensing and field activities, including new dataset development and evaluation.
