Abstract
Many patterned fens in the La Grande River watershed (Quebec, Canada) show numerous signs of degradation of their vegetation cover and its transformation into pools or shallow ponds due to waterlogging. The spatio-temporal change in ridge-pool patterning could alter their hydrology and the greenhouse gas exchange. In order to assess the structural development of patterned peatlands over the last 50 years, we applied a semi-automated object-based method for classification of very high resolution QuickBird panchromatic images and black-and-white aerial photographs. The results show surface expansion for 33 out of 36 studied peatlands. The surface area of aquatic compartments for 19 out of 36 peatlands has also increased during the last 50 years.
