Abstract
This guidebook presents the geological evolution, glacial history, sea level record, periglacial geomorphology and archaeology of the Churchill region and emphasizes some of the problems encountered with permafrost engineering. The first part of the guide gives a summary of the natural environment and explains how the land evolved and how it is changing now. The second part gives site by site descriptions of specific features along several excursion routes in tundra and peatland environments at Churchill, across the Hudson Bay Lowlands along the Hudson Bay Railway, and into the boreal forest at Gillam. The cultural history of the area is described at the archaeological sites on the west side of the Churchill estuary.
