Abstract
Geoscientists, hydrologists, foresters, and biologists who are interested in stream channel dynamics or fish habitat characteristics often need informationon bedload sediment transport dynamics. In the first part of this article, we describe the basic equations relating the behaviour of tracer stones that are initially placed on the bed surface and that are about the same size as the median surface grain size to the behaviour of the entire bed material population. In the second part of the article, we describe the methods developed at the University of British Columbia for constructing tracer particlesthat represent the median grain size, deploying them in the field, and ultimately recovering them after a flood event.
