Abstract
In March 1998, the lower Great Lakes erosion initiative was established which later became the Lower Great Lakes Erosion Study (LGLES). The objective of LGLES was to develop a tool which could be used by agencies, groups and individuals to: predict where and to what extent erosion will occur based on projected water levels for information purposes, determine sensitive areas where development should be avoided, and provide an interface with GIS, digital photography and other media. In September 1999, the IJC submitted to governments its plan of study (POS) to review the criteria within the regulation plan, Plan 1958-D, for Lake Ontario. As a result of the POS, in December 2000, the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study was formed. The five-year, twenty million-dollar study is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken by the IJC in its ninety-year history. Much of the field work data collected during the LGLES is being used as baseline information for flood and erosion evaluations being performed for ILOSLRS by both the Study's Coastal Processes and Environmental Technical Work Groups. The predictive models envisioned during LGLES will become a reality as a result of this broader study which is scheduled for completion in March 2006.
