Abstract
This report provides textural and mineralogical data from sands found within 4 shallow marine environments of eastern Baffin Island: coastal beaches, a side-entry beach complex, fjord deltas (sandurs) and prodeltas .... Local and regional variations in sand texture and heavy mineralogy as well as possible causes thereof are discussed. The long-term objective of this project is to establish a sediment model for sand transport and deposition in arctic nearshore environments as it relates to the development of heavy mineral placer deposits. The investigation forms one component of the Sedimentology of Arctic Fjords Experiment (SAFE), a multidisciplinary program detailing oceanographic, geologic and biological concerns in arctic fjords (Syvtiski and Schafer). SAFE was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada at the Atlantic Geoscience Centre and involves the participation of three federal government branches and eight universities.
