Abstract
The limits of the last glaciation on northern Ellesmere Island have been mapped extensively in a number of independent studies. Ice margins and retreat patterns have been reconstructed using moraines, kames, glacimarine sediment assemblages and meltwater channels. Glacial advance was in the order of 5-40km and, in areas where large reentrants penetrate the coastline, was restricted by calving. A stable full glacial sea existed outside of the ice margins. Because large areas remained ice free, any evidence of older, more extensive glaciations should be preserved. However, evidence of older glaciations on northern Ellesmere Island is fragmentary. This paper reports observations and data pertaining to older glacial events in the Phillips Inlet/Wootton Peninsula area of northwest Ellesmere Island.
