Abstract

Recent investigations in the southern part of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C.) demonstrate that this area was occupied prior to 9000 yr BP. Archaeological excavation and palaeoecologicval analysis of two sites on Arrow Creek and paleoenvironmental analysis of two sediment cores collected from adjacnet Matheson Inlet show that the sites were occupied during a time of radpid sea level change. The oldest archaeological remains at these sites date to shortly before 9200 yr BP and the youngest to 5650 yr BP.
